The main life lesson in section 3 is that parenting matters. It really does matter how you treat your kids and your family. You can't live a double life, like Chris's dad. It really hurts your childen, and the rest of your family, as it hurt Chris. Also, it's a good idea to give your children the proper care and attention they need. Walt didn't pay much attention to Chris, because of his job, which affected Chris too. How you treat your kids affects them for a very long time.
Another life lesson is to think about others. Chris devasted his family when he disappeared, especially his sister, Carine and mother, Billie. They both did not deserve to be shut out of Chris's life. They think about him everyday, constantly mourning his death.
Another important lesson from this section, is to know when to stop. Jon Krakauer really wanted to climb The Devil's Thumb, which is extremely dangerous and life-costing. He made it very far up glaciers in rough conditions, un-prepared. He got stuck at a base camp. If he would have went even further, he most likely would have died. Thankfully, after coming very far, he knew it was best to turn back, rather than loose his life.
